I spoke to Tom Jentz at AMPS East last year where he had a lecture and it turns out that the improved cupola is NOT a determining designator. The loader's periscope on top of the turret and the gun mantlet/rotor shield are far better.
Please refer to page 5-74 of Panzer Tracts 5-2 for a clear photo showing an Ausf A with a drum cupola.
