BEIJING (Reuters) - Seventy children from a kindergarten were in hospital in southern China suffering from food poisoning after eating lunches that may have been laced with rat poison, local officials said on Tuesday.
The children and two teachers began vomiting and suffering fits on Monday after eating lunch at the kindergarten on the outskirts of Wuchuan city in Guangdong province, hospital and government officials said.
"All victims are now in stable condition. But it's hard to say whether the poisoning will be lethal because victims are likely to have fits at any time over the next three days," a doctor at the Wuchuan People's Hospital said by telephone.
All the victims were under the age of six.
Five children who had showed severe symptoms were in stable condition after receiving treatment, the local Southern Metropolitan newspaper said on its Web Site www.nanfangdaily.com.
Police investigating the incident suspected the children had been deliberately poisoned, a local government official said.
He said preliminary tests identified the cause of the poisoning was a brand of rat poison that killed at least 42 people after a man spiked a business rival's breakfast snacks in the eastern city of Nanjing in September.
The same brand of rat poison was also found at the scene of two food poisoning incidents in which five people died after eating at restaurants in the northwestern city of Xian in late September.
Xian officials ordered all available supplies of the rat poison to be destroyed, newspaper reports said.
