Russia launches production of new small-caliber submachine gun

Moscow, 14 March: Russian gunsmiths have launched a series production of the
A-91 small-calibre sub-machine-gun. The New Programmes and Concepts
industrial holding company, which produces arms for ground troops, today
told an ITAR-TASS correspondent that the weapon was designed for army
reconnaissance subunits and special units formed to fight terrorists. The
sub-machine-gun was tested during the counterterrorist operation in the
North Caucasus.
The sub-machine-gun, with the gun range of up to 1,000 m, has an in-built
grenade launcher and an optical aiming device which increases the efficiency
of firing by 100-200 per cent. It weighs up to 4 kg and its barrel is 41.5
cm long. According to experts, the new Russian sub-machine-gun has good
prospects on the world market of armaments. Apart from traditional
reliability and durability, it will attract foreign customers because of the
type of ammunition it uses. The sub-machine-gun uses the 7.62mm cartridge of
the year 1943 design, and this will allow it to find its own niche on the
markets of the Asian-Pacific region and the Middle East, where such
cartridges are produced in large quantities under a licence.
